Combatient Woman - Guinea Bissau 2009

Guinea Bissau represents one of the most important examples of how the female presence contributed effectively to the development of nationalism. Without them it would have been impossible to have achieved the independence of Guinea Bissau from Portugal on  September 10, 1974.

Women who participated carrying out different tasks such as: Nurses, educators, soldiers, food logistics, communication with combatants, are the main protagonists of an armed struggle that lasted more than a decade. Some of them, at the end of the war, held public positions within the government, however the vast majority were forgotten, without receiving recognition for their great importance in the fight for independence.

In each of the images appears: the portrait of women who participated in the fight for the independence of Guinea Bissau, along with a document that proves their identity and a Portuguese colonial vestige that currently exists in Guinea Bissau..
